Seasonal feasting at Riverford Field Kitchen in Buckfastleigh

Housed in a bright, airy building tucked away in the rolling Devon Hills, Riverford Field Kitchen has a distinctly relaxed and friendly vibe; communal trestle tables are arranged at one end of the room and the open kitchen is at the other.

The set menu changes daily and is a celebration of all things seasonal, plucked fresh from the surrounding farmland which also supplies the organic veg boxes that the company is best known for.

Dishes arrive on large platters for diners to pass around and help themselves: on our visit, a crisp fennel and orange salad was followed by marinated chicken with cannellini beans and a mouthwatering array of vegetable sides.

Having visited before, we were careful to leave room for pudding: the selection is delectable and, as each table is called to the counter to choose, you can expect to be greeted by the likes of sponge pudding, cheesecake, tart and crumble. I chose a cloud-like raspberry pavlova, which was the perfect end to my lunch.

Next time we visit we’re going to leave time for a tour of the farm, which sounds like the ideal way to work up an appetite for another delicious meal.
